Solo Project

Rhino / D5

For this project I was tasked to make a transportable studio and a piece of furniture

to accompany it. I started with a system of domes, and after realizing the limitations

of Domes I decided that switching my design to yurts would be beneficial. They have

better potential for airflow, less parts, and are easier to build with largely sustainable

materials. For this project I added a windcatcher on the top of the yurt to increase airflow,

as well as a fan that has paddles and is powered by the wind. The exterior material is nylon

ripstop, and the rest of the yurt is bamboo. The location I chose for this project is right next

to the metal and wood working shop. Student could do a seminar in the yurt and head inside

to create. The yurts are supposed to pop out of the ground and look like mushrooms. The

general shape, layout, and color supports this.

For the chair I wanted to create with entirely sustainable materials. This chair is made out of

bamboo, rattan, and leather wrappings. No screws or nails were made in this and it could

support weight. I enjoyed working with new materials, and while this was an effective piece

of art, it would not be able to be reproduced easily for accessibility, and this is an unaffordable

method. In the future I would like to create more accessible furniture.
